Founded in St Austell in the early 1930's Stephens & Scown is a major Westcountry law firm with its head office in Exeter, two major offices in St Austell and Truro, a branch office in Liskeard and an office in Plymouth which opened in early 1999. The Plymouth office practices as Stephens & Scown but also uses the brand name of LawDirect.

It is a well established commercial and private client practice with an increasing number of national and international clients. It covers the full range of commercial work and has particular specialisms in agriculture, mining, quarrying, employment, planning and commercial property, and waste disposal. Private client work undertaken includes wills, probate and trusts as well as domestic conveyancing.

The firm also has broad experience of criminal and civil litigation, advocacy, matrimonial and family work, and personal injury. In August 1995 the firm was in the first group to be awarded a franchise by the Legal Aid Board.
